Three Reasons for the Boston Marathon’s Popularity

Based in Portland, Oregon, Graeme Queen serves as senior director of the IT Solution Delivery team at Standard Insurance Company. In his free time, Graeme Queen enjoys running, with a goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Even many non-runners are familiar with the Boston Marathon. Here are some reasons why the Boston Marathon is so popular.

1) The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world, dating back to 1897, which means it comes with a lot of history. The marathon has seen memorable moments, such as the showdown between Dick Beardsley and Alberto Salazar in 1982 and the 1967 race where Katherine Switzer became the first woman to finish a major marathon.

2) Runners must qualify to run the Boston Marathon. This means they have to complete another marathon under a certain amount of time in order to participate in the Boston Marathon, making it a prestigious race and a goal for most serious runners.

3) The spectators are fun. As the race is held on a regional holiday known as Patriot’s Day, many people have the day off and will cheer on the runners. The route also passes by multiple colleges, and the students are enthusiastic supporters.
